Hurst Horse Show and Country Fayre 29 and 30 June
"The horses return" is the clear message from the Horse Show Committee after last year's temporary changes due to the Foot and Mouth outbreak. Horse jumping and Show events will take place on both days and will be complemented by a larger than ever "living country crafts" exhibition.
The country theme will build on last year's successes with a small animal area, ferret racing, hawk display, fishy corner, small pet show and more, all to be rounded off with the traditional terrier (and other dogs) racing - each afternoon.
Put this wonderful weekend of family entertainment in your diary now. The show raises thousands of pounds each year for St. Nicholas Primary School as well as many village and local charities and worthy causes.
Other organisations including Wokingham Army Cadet Force and the Red Diamonds help to put on the show but the bulk of the work is put in by the people of the village, and in particular by the St. Nicholas PTA. Contact David Lochman (0118 934 xxxx) if you would like to join the organising committee, or just to help on the weekend itself - as there is always room for willing help!
Two wheels are better than four!
As a member of the Wokingham District Council's Environmental Overview & Scrutiny panel, which is consulting cyclists on the council's cycling policy I am aware how many complaints villagers have about the uneven surface of the village roads which are not favourable for cyclists and do not encourage us to leave our cars at home, writes Annette Drake.
The objective of the committee is get an integrated cycle route, where feasible, and to ask the cycling public to help identify better routes and sort out how best to make shared pavements with pedestrians safer.
Many roads in Hurst can be treacherous for cyclists, and I intend to push for improved surfaces on rural roads in general. We are thinking of ways to help Hurst's cyclists, and if anyone has any constructive criticisms or comments of any sort on this subject I would be happy to hear from you. I can be contacted on 0118 934 xxxx.
