VANDALISM ON THE INCREASE

Hurst has seen an increase in vandalism and anti-social behaviour from young people over the past few months, writes Parish Council Chairman Jan Martin. The Cricket Club and Dorndon House have both been hit, and fire seems to be a big attraction.

Vandalism is a criminal offence and not just high spirits. Inspector Graham Garner from Wokingham Police Station, who has replaced Inspector Tony Walker, has asked for residents to report acts of vandalism and criminal damage so that the police can take action.

The incident number is 0118 953 xxxx.
To report a crime taking place, dial 999.

Unless incidents are reported to the police, they will assume there is no crime in Hurst and nothing will be done. If the police have a realistic record of criminal activity then we stand a better chance of putting pressure to bear to increase the police presence.

STREET WORKER COMES TO HURST

The Parish Council has called in an experienced community street worker Chris Pape to help overcome the problems caused by vandalism. She will spend time in the village, meeting with young people and talking to them about how they would like to see facilities for young people in the village develop, and what can be done to prevent crime.

Chris works for Wokingham District Council, and the Parish Council is funding her work in the village. She thinks that problems in Hurst can be resolved and is looking forward to meeting people. If anyone would like to help Chris, please contact Jan Martin on 0118 934 xxxx.
