Work Starts in New Year on Safer Routes to St. Nicholas School

Work starts on 20 January to make pavements and roads safer for parents and children attending St. Nicholas School, and other pedestrians.

Following extensive consultation with residents and the school, Wokingham District Council presented its plans to governors in November. These include:

  • Narrowing the roads at the junctions of Hinton Road and Tape Lane with the A321 - and widening the pavements or grass verges
  • Installing two road-narrowing 'gateways' in School Road with 'dragon's teeth' road markings to encourage drivers to slow down - and wider pavements at these points
  • Flashing amber warning lights effective at times when children arrive and leave school
  • Tape Lane access from School Road to be narrowed, and anti-skid surface on Tape Lane near that junction
  • New footpath between Little Cottage at Ward's Cross (A321) and School Road

"I am very pleased that we are going to get this work done as soon as possible," said Wokingham District Councillor Annette Drake. "These measures and the 30 mph speed limit will make walking and cycling to school much easier and safer for children, and encourage motorists to drive more safely too."
